The AGA Hybrid Cattle Recording
Savvy
cattle producers have known for years
that a Gelbvieh by Angus cross is hard
to beat: as a feeder calf, carcass, or
mama cow. Research from the United
States Meat Animal Research Center
confirms this concluding that a 50%
Continental, 50% British animal is most
optimal. Data from the Gelbvieh
Alliance also points to an animal of
near 50% Continental, 50% British
make-up as being most ideal for hitting
industry targets for carcass and feedlot
specifications. Realizing these facts
and the need for hybrid seedstock, the
innovative AGA developed a registered,
trademarked hybrid known as the Balancer®.
Any
animal, of any breed or cross, may be
recorded using the AGA Hybrid Cattle
Recording Service. AGA documents the
pedigree, breed composition, and
calculates performance data and provides
EPDs. This is accomplished by filling
out and submitting a registration
application and marking the “hybrid” box
on the application. Animals eligible
for both AGA registry and Hybrid service
cannot be recorded in both herdbooks,
but can be transferred from one to the
other for the regular transfer fee.
A
Balancer® is a specific
hybrid with the following breed
composition and documentation
requirements: • A combination of ¼ to ¾ Gelbvieh and ¼ to ¾ Angus or Red Angus with a maximum of 1/8th unknown or other breed, and • The sire and dam must be recorded by an officially recognized organization (AGA, American Angus Association or Red Angus Association of America), and • At least 75% of the pedigree must be known and documented by the AGA and/or another officially recognized registration association. To register a Balancer®, if the above three rules apply, the animal will be registered as a Balancer. For calves born before January 1, 2002, simply mark the “Hybrid” box on the registration application. Click
